A night guard (occlusal splint) is used by those patients having excessive grinding of their teeth during sleeping. It is an acrylic device and in more acute phases, a night guard of rubber can be used.
It is placed either in the upper or lower jaw. You wear it while you are sleeping, to prevent you from having direct tooth-to-tooth contact and to relax the chewing muscles.
